Colonel Tans – Prahran Thai Food

Colonel Tans is located upstairs and just behind Revolver, at 229 Chapel Street Prahran. It’s a bit tricky to find, but have faith and keep heading in upstairs until you find it.
Colonel Tan’s is probably the quirkiest place I’ve come across so far. It’s definitely the only eatery I’ve seen that has a DJ’s booth surrounded by a chain fence, as well as playable arcade games. It’s definitely a bar/restaurant, with the food area being more brightly lit than the bar area. I was especially a fan of the stencil art spread around the place
Now I have a seafood allergy which can sometimes make eating thai food a bit of a risky prospect, but the staff were really helpful about letting me know which dishes would be safe and then double checking with the kitchen afterwards. It’s not something that’s applicable to everyone, but the extra care was definitely appreciated.
Now the food here is definitely cheap, so it’s very easy to get away with less than $30 per head including drinks. Daisy and I had already had an appetiser from the nearby Massive Weiners, so we lept straight into the mains. We played it safe with their Fat Duck Noodles paired with their Coconut Rice, and were very pleased.
First off, despite being cheap they don’t skimp on the meat. Most of the time if I’m ordering a meal that has meat and is less than $20 I’m not expecting a good ratio of meat to sides menu, but this was great. The duck was excellent and the meal was just spicy enough to keep it interesting without sending my fiance Daisy screaming for a glass of water. The rice was equally tasty, with a neat amount of garnish and, thankfully for daisy, an avoidable amount of chilli.
Overall, a great and cheap meal, and definitely a great spot for a cheap date night. With Chapel off Chapel around the corner you can easily fit it in before a show.
