The Italian – Awesome Italian food

The Italian is located at 101 Collins St, although it can also be accessed via Flinders Lane as well. It’s speciality is, predictably, Italian and it does a damn fine job of it. My in-laws and I went there for a special Christmas dinner over the weekend, and this place delivered.

First off, we were lucky to have the sommelier looking after our table. If this ever happens to you, take advantage of the knowledge and advice swinging by your table every few minutes. She was spot on for all of her wine recommendations, and a lot of fun to boot. The actual venue itself is enormous, split over two levels and with enormously wide ceilings. Despite there being a few diners there by the end of the night, the high ceilings meant we could all chat very easily with each other without having to shout.

As for the food, once she’d rattled off all the specials we all looked at each other and agreed to order one of each of the entrée specials and then some. My personal favourite was the prosciutto, but the pork terrine was a close second. I think the tipping point were those almost impossibly thin grissini to wrap the prosciutto around.

The winner in the food envy stakes was.. the steak! More specifically, the 400g rib-eye steak cooked as rare as the chef would allow. Judging by how quickly it vanished from my brother-in-law’s plate, it tasted as good as it looked.

I had the pork belly, and that was amazing as well. It was perfectly tender, the flesh underneath fell apart at the lightest touch. I have to recommend getting the broccoli and bean greens to go with this meat-a-thon, tasted great and helped create balance.

For dessert I had to try the affogato. This seemed to be a house speciality and it was a great finish to the meal. If you’ve never tried one before, this is the place to try it out.

Overall it’s an expensive night out, but you definitely get what you pay for. Excellent customer service, food and wine all added up to a wonderful night out, and would love to come back. Their website is here.
